Read the match, not just the numbers
Possession, shots and the score answer different questions. Use the numbers together with what happened on the pitch.

Start with the question
A match total describes an event; it does not explain every reason behind it. A team can have long spells on the ball without finding a route into a dangerous position. A team protecting a lead may choose to give up territory. Start with the score and the period of the match before drawing a conclusion from possession.
Look at chances in context
A shot count combines very different attempts. A blocked effort from distance and a close-range chance are both shots, but the situations are different. Use the timeline and your own observation alongside the totals. Do not invent missing detail when a provider has not supplied it.
Compare like with like
Check whether a number is a full-match total or a live update, and whether both teams are being measured by the same source. An early red card, a substitution or a change in score can alter the pattern. Statistics are a starting point for asking better questions, not a verdict on their own.
