Three things to watch away from the ball

One midfielder, one passage of play

Choose a midfielder for a few minutes. When a defender has possession, does the midfielder move into a passing lane or stay behind an opponent? Notice the small changes in angle rather than only the eventual pass. Your aim is to see how the next option is created.

The player on the far side

When the ball stays on one flank, look across the pitch. The wide player on the other side may remain near the touchline or move inside. Either position changes the possible next move. Watch what happens when the ball is switched, without assuming that every run was part of a rehearsed plan.

The line behind the attack

As an attack develops, check where the defenders and deepest midfielder wait. Their spacing matters if possession changes. Follow the first few seconds after a turnover: who pressures the ball and who protects the space behind?
