What to Check Before Sharing a Football News Article

When you see news of a player transfer, coaching change, or match postponement, don't decide based on a single screenshot. Open the original page of the club, competition organizer, or relevant body. A similar logo and colors do not guarantee it's an official page, so you should also check the account name and web address.

An official statement is a strong source to confirm what that organization has said. However, it should not be assumed to automatically cover all perspectives of the event. In controversial matters, separately present verifiable statements from various involved parties and keep your own commentary separate from the information.

Don't change the level of confirmation

Being discussed, close to agreement, and officially signed are different stages. Removing the source's uncertainty to make the headline more exciting changes the meaning of the news. If it's unconfirmed news, clearly state who reported it and which facts are unconfirmed.

Finding the same news on many websites does not mean there are many independent sources. All may be citing one original post. Trace the source chain, and if it's a single origin, you shouldn't write as if there are multiple confirmations. Reuters' editorial standards also emphasize accurate attribution of sources.

Date and image background

A post reshared today may not be about something that happened today. Old injury news, old coach's comments, and old match videos can be spread as if new. Check the original publication date and the event date separately, and cross-check the opponent, competition, and season. If there's an update date, you should also read what was changed.

In the image, you can check background details such as team kits, advertising boards, scoreboards, and weather. A short video may have cut out context, so if the full version is available, watch it again. The image alone can only show that two people met at a certain place and cannot by itself confirm that a contract was agreed.

Take responsibility for translation and editing

When translating from English to Myanmar or from Myanmar to English, separately check names, amounts, contract durations, and words expressing uncertainty. AI can produce natural-sounding sentences but may add facts not in the original, so you need to compare with the original. When quoting someone, be especially careful not to change the meaning.

If you find an error after publishing, explain important corrections instead of silently changing the text. Recording the original link, the time checked, and the reason for the correction makes it easier to review later. Providing accurate verifiable facts rather than being the fastest builds long-term trust in football content.

Applying in practice

For a news draft you are about to publish, you can keep a short checklist. Check: Is there an original link? Is the date correct? Is the headline more certain than the original? Are quotes and names correct? If one point is incomplete, keep it as a draft and confirm further. Traceability of everything you publish is more valuable to readers than publishing frequently.
