Speed and timing in line-breaking passes

Seeing the space between the lines alone will not make a pass successful. FIFA Training Centre’s lesson on line-breaking play emphasises preparation, body shape and pass quality.

When watching a match, note whether the ball reaches the receiver’s feet and also whether it sets up their next action. A pass that is too soft can give the opponent time to press, while one that is too hard can make control difficult.

Open space may appear only momentarily. Therefore, watching the movement of the ball carrier and the receiver simultaneously gives a better understanding of the quality of a pass.
