The first touch sets up the next move

The purpose of the first touch is not merely to stop the ball. FIFA Training Centre's lesson shows that body shape and receiving direction should be considered in connection with the subsequent play.

When watching a match, observe whether the player needs to adjust again after receiving the ball, or can pass or shoot immediately. Touching the ball towards open space can buy time, but touching it towards pressure can cause problems.

Do not judge the distance of a first touch without considering the situation. The required touch may differ when there is space to run into and when there is close pressure. Focus mainly on whether it facilitates the next action.
