FIFA Football Language categorises the pressure present at first touch into direct pressure, indirect pressure, and no pressure. Having an opponent nearby does not always mean they are closing in directly to challenge for the ball.
When watching a match, observe whether the opponent is arriving to win the ball or blocking the possible passing lanes. Even for the same reception, the assessment should change if the pressure situation is different.
Do not label every backward pass as a lack of courage. If the forward passing lanes are blocked, passing back and finding a new angle can be a viable option. Look at the picture at the moment of receiving before judging the decision.
